Tips for reading IBM Redbooks in Adobe Acrobat Format

IBM Redbooks are made available in Adobe PDF format. To view PDF's on the web or offline you must have either the full Adobe Acrobat product or the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. They install as a plugin to your browser and get launched when you click on a PDF. Until June 2000 IBM Redbooks have been created using Acrobat 3.0 compatibility. This meant that older versions of Acrobat were supported. However we have found that the latest (4.05a as of May 23/00) versions solve many viewing and printing problems! Starting in June we will begin saving PDF's in full Acrobat 4 mode which means you must have the Adobe Acrobat 4.x reader (or Full Acrobat 4.x product). The free Acrobat Reader can be downloaded from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

The number one tip for solving viewing and printing problems is to get the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader as described above. After that, most problems are associated with network topology and/or browser configurations. If downloading and installing the latest Acrobat Reader does not solve your problem then the number two tip is to download the full pdf to your local system and launch the Acrobat Reader against it directly.

On the Lightyear site this can be done in most browsers by navigating to the abstract of the IBM Redbook you are interested in and instead of clicking the left mouse button on "Download PDF", click the right mouse button and select the option to save locally. This can also be done on the Redbook title on the particular Redbook page.

For example the option in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.00 is "Save Target As" and in Netscape Communicator 4.7 it is "Save Link As." Please note that since these pdf's are served page-at-a-time, it is generally not feasible to use your browser's File-Save-As option to successfully save a local copy of a pdf.

IBM Redbooks can be quite large and graphics intensive. We hope that these tips will help you to successfully use the materials provided here.
