BAD REFERRER. ERROR MESSAGE ON FORM SUBMISSION

If you use a PC Firewall like Norton™ PC Firewall which switches off browser referrer info by default- which the server has already obtained anyway, or use a browser like Netscape which by default set-up uses local cache as if off-line, then this server and any server has the right to consider you a risk and you will experience problems because of lack of STANDARD HTTP conversation protocols.

To alleviate this you can adjust your firewall settings to allow browser referrer info (see below). This does not pose a security threat to your PC. It is the security on our server script which prevents submission of the form from a local cached or remote host such as your PC when the referrer field is blocked.

NOTE: For instructions on passing referrer information with Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003, see the document How to pass referrer information to specific Web pages in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003.

Resolution:

You can set Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) to allow or block referrer information from specific Web servers. The configuration options are located in the Privacy tab under Advanced Options. For specific instructions, see the document How to pass referrer information to specific Web pages. Located at the Symantec Web site. You should "allow all" or at least add www.lightyr.com to the allowed referrers. The default is "Block all", and this is not necessary or least should be amended by the user of the software.

Referrer fields are typically used in one of two ways:

When you click a link that opens a new Web page, the referrer field lets the Web server know where you have been on the Internet. That is, when you click a link on an online Web page to go to a different Web page and that Web page is on a different Web server, the current Web server sends the information that is in the referrer field to the new Web server. The referrer field contains information that identifies which page you were on before you arrived at the new Web page. When you block the referrer information, the new Web server cannot tell what Web page you were on previously. Instead, it appears to the new Web server that you typed the URL in your browser or selected it from your bookmarks, rather than linking to that page from a previous Web page.

Lightyear servers need to know that the form was processed from a page on our server when it calls the script to process the form. Your firewall by preventing referrer fields does not allow this. Taking this feature off on your firewall will not pose a security threat to your system.
