Question:
What is the Effect of Unicode on DB2 Catalog and Directory DASD
Requirements? What percentage of increase should we be prepared
to request from our storage administrators? |
| |
Answer:
Customers that have already converted to DB2 V8 have varied
experiences with the implementation of UNICODE on the DB2 catalog
and directory. There are customers that have seen a reduction
in DASD requirements and those that have seen a 1 to 10 percent
increase in DASD requirements. |
| |
There
appears to be one major factor that will greatly affect your
experience more than any other. When was the last time that
you reorganized the DB2 catalog and directory? If it has been
a long time since this event, then the impact of UNICODE on
DASD requirements will probably be minor, you might even see
a reduction in space allocated. This is because a disorganized
catalog that has not been reorganized is probably over allocated
to start with. If, however, you have reorganized the catalog
and directory recently, then you may see an increase in the
range of 1 to 5 percent. There have been anomalies where the
increase was 10 percent, but an increase of that size is not
representative of most shops. |
